Stone Farm Regional Mitigation Bank

Location: Calabash, North Carolina

Project Summary:

Land Management Group, Inc. (LMG) was contracted by a private landowner to develop and implement a large-scale mitigation bank within the 1,400 acre Stone Farm Property. Over the past century, this property has been managed for a variety of uses ranging from rice cultivation to silvicultural production. These uses degraded or removed several wetland ecosystems including a 145 ac. Carolina Bay and several small Coastal Plain streams. As the principal consultant, LMG provided the following services during the mitigation site development process:

Following extensive field investigations, a comprehensive restoration plan was developed that included over 20,000 linear feet of stream restoration and 300 acres of wetland restoration. Several different habitats including small stream swamp, swamp forest, and bay forest have been targeted to integrate with the remaining pine forests found in the adjacent uplands providing numerous opportunities for wildlife recolonization and local water quality improvements. Overall, the project offers a rare opportunity to restore an entire Coastal Plain watershed in an area currently experiencing acute development pressure. Construction was initiated in October 2007 and will continue throughout 2009.
